I imagine this is what living in Trinidad and Tobago was like. The beach and delicious fruit. That’s what my mother tells me at least. I wouldn’t know because I lived there when from when I was an infant into toddlerhood. It would be awesome to remember a time where the beach was a short walk away and delicious fruit was available all the time. A time where it’s warm all year long and there aren’t any winters. All I’m accustomed to is the suburbs of metro-Atlanta and life as a college student in Athens. I’m growing weary of Georgia.I am excited to graduate in the spring and move onto the next chapter of my life in a different location.

There was a large thunderstorm last week and the neighborhood I live in had a power outage. I was halfway through cooking pasta for dinner and the electricity just suddenly cut off. I was left in a dark kitchen with a pot full of useless half-cooked pasta. I was hungry, tired and bored. My roommates and I decided to go on an adventure to find a restaurant in Athens that still had power. We found a Waffle House over on Epps Bridge Parkway and ate there. We figured we would have nothing to do at home so we went to Kroger and bought hair dye for one of my roommate. It seemed like a good idea at the time until we came home and put our plan to action. We dyed her hair in the dark with only a flashlight to provide some lighting. It was a fun experience. I ended up with hair dye on my legs and arms from where the dye dripped from her hair. We made quite a mess, but in the end there was no result. After we washed out the dye I held a light to her hair and there wasn’t any difference in her hair color. While it seemed like a waste of $7, the pure spontaneity of the situation was a lot fun.

But the Internet is changing every institution in society. It enables new approaches to innovation, requiring new thinking about patents and copyright. It renders old institutions naked, requiring more transparency on the part of governments and corporations. It disrupts old models of learning and pedagogy demanding a change a relationship between students and teachers in the learning process. It offers new models of democracy based on a culture of public discourse, in turn compelling old style politicians to engage their citizens. It turns intellectual property into bits, that don’t know the old rules that governed atoms of how to behave. It drops the transaction costs of dissent, subjecting dictators and tyrants to the power of mass participation. It breaks down national boundaries and requiring a rethinking of how peoples everywhere can cooperate to solve global problems. And for the first time in history children are an authority on the most important innovation changing every institution in society.

I saw this and I thought it was relevant to the EDIT2000 class. This illustration just goes to show how prominent technology is in schools and that is also growing rapidly. It makes me wonder if our society will truly get to a point where classrooms will use technological/digital based tools or equipment for everything regarding learning and teaching. Will the children of the future even know what a piece of paper looks and feels like?

My First Dog

I got my first puppy over Memorial Day weekend. It is quite a big deal for me because I have always wished and prayed every year since I was 5 years-old that my parents would get a puppy for the family. After a lot of persuasion over the past few weeks I have successfully convinced my parents to get a puppy. We got a 9 week-old female Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Zoey and she is the sweetest puppy I have ever met. Initially she was very timid and afraid and after a few days of warming up to the family she became quite the diva. She would bark and whine at us if we ignored her or left her in the room alone. If I yell at her for making a mess on the rug she will run away and stick her head under the couch and ignore me for a few minutes. Like I said earlier she is a fussy little diva sometimes, but is still lovable and quite cuddly!
